This one-of-a-kind architectural marvel is gently tucked away on a private 5+ acre wooded lot bordering Credit River Township & Lakeville. The home has been carefully and thoughtfully remodeled over the course of the past 15 years and includes an ingenious combination of both reclaimed and modern finish materials. Nearly every room in the home has a story that is sure to fascinate historical enthusiasts and home shoppers alike.
The exterior of this home is lined with beautiful cobblestone granite that, near the turn of the century, made up part of a Downtown Minneapolis roadway. As the city grew and the need for a cheaper roadway material became necessary, the streets were removed and separated by prisoners of the Cold Spring prison. After many years past, they were reclaimed and chosen to bless the exterior of this home with their remarkable beauty and strength. In 2011, a slate roof along with copper flashing and gutters were added to complete the vintage look. Last year, the owner upgraded the landscaping incorporating more of the cobblestone granite, cocoa mulch and miscellaneous native plantings. The rear yard features a breathtaking waterfall that spills into a coy pond and is lit by multi-colored LED lighting. Further to the rear of the property is a perch that peers down onto a wild pond.
The interior of this home is sure to capture your interest right from the moment you enter. Notice the main front door as it was reclaimed from an old church. Probably the same church the stained glass window in the nearby office was found and carefully incorporated into this home. As you make your way through the foyer and into the main living room and kitchen area, make sure to take note of the rare black walnut wood floors that grace the living room and the unique fireplace in that same space. The fireplace in surround was originally part of a portico on the entrance to the nurse's quarters at the Glenn Lake Sanitarium in Oak Terrace, MN (now Minnetonka.) Part of that portico was used here in the fireplace and the rest, is used on the pedestrian bridge over the waterfall in the rear yard.
Moving into the kitchen, it’s hard not to be in awe of the terrific slab of black onyx granite. It is nearly 4 inches thick and was mined in Nigeria and shipped from Africa to the United States across the Atlantic Ocean. Beneath your feet in the kitchen are custom cut, travertine limestone tiles imported from Mexico. These are very rare and show some unique fossilizing patterns. The stone columns nearby are also from Mexico and were pre-cast from silicate materials gathered there. All of the kitchen cabinets are made from hickory except for the refrigerator cabinet which is seldom used but beautiful butternut wood. The beam overhead is one of the main structural members of this home and was sandblasted by hand to accentuate the wood grain. Near the Viking range, you may notice the two Corbels with a carved lion head on either side of the range. Interestingly, these were recovered from a farmer’s field in France and were added as an impressive design element and conversation piece to this already character-filled kitchen.
Moving into the second entrance, the idyllic arched entry door offers another custom touch not found in today's straight line homes. Be sure not to miss the stable door adding privacy to the powder room and custom cabinetry complete with a salvaged mail locker unit drawn from an old local apartment building. The pantry cabinet holds a secret compartment allowing for even more storage.
As you make your way up the spiral staircase, you'll pass right by the fireplace chase finished in weathered Chicago brick, truly a showpiece! The staircase leads to a loft area that doubles as a billiards room. The billiards room floors are made from sturdy Douglas fir reclaimed from a previous life as roof sheathing on a different home. This space is yet another feature that embodies the spirit of this charming home.
Finally, on the main level is the comfortable family room with a magnificently rustic fireplace, one of six fireplaces in the home. This fireplace doors are forged from industrial steel and the mantle appears to have been part of a main support beam for an old barn or home. Sadly, the exact history behind this fireplace has been lost through the years but one thing is for sure, it is a living piece of art that rounds out this unforgettable main level.
The upper level of the home features two separate levels. The first of the two levels holds four bedrooms, one of which is a guest suite with an attached bathroom that has heated floors, classic tile and a claw foot tub. This suite holds yet another wood burning fireplace and before the attic was converted to the new master suite, was formerly used as such. This suite has its own private balcony overlooking the backyard. The other three bedrooms are well sized with well-appointed quarter sawn oak woodwork and doors. This level also houses another full bathroom with heated floors and an elegant finish level.
Perhaps the signature space of this entire home, the 3rd level master suite has an open concept with many dramatic yet functional touches. The backdrop of this space is the extension of the weathered Chicago brick chimney chase continued from the kitchen area. This peaceful retreat also showcases reclaimed black ash wood floors fastened with cool cast iron rivets, the most popular method of attaching floors around the turn of the century. The classic oak cabinetry is designed to maximize storage space with double deep drawers. Don’t miss the television tucked neatly behind the vanity mirror or the actual saloon swinging doors aged to perfection and adding privacy to the commode. Completing this exceptional space are collectively, a private veranda with views of the rear yard and beyond, a full wet bar, all slate shower, walk-in closet with built-in drawers and relaxing whirlpool tub with views to the outdoors. This epic space offers one of the most memorable examples of design and ingenuity imaginable.
Making your way back downstairs and into the lower level, make certain to take note of the provincial quarter sawn oak paneling and solid oak five panel doors. The staircase is finished off with an authentic wrought iron rail system.
Upon entering the lower level, you will most assuredly see the exercise room first finished off with a natural stone wall and mirror complete with hidden television behind it. If the need for a sixth bedroom arises, an egress window and closet could be added to this space rather easily. Flanking the exercise room is a hallway that leads to the home theater area. The home theater area includes yet another wood burning fireplace encased in natural stone and a state of the art high definition projection screen system. What a great space to relax with the family and take in a movie. Near the home theater area, you will find a hallway that features a Chicago brick barrel vault ceiling and leads to a wine tasting room. The door to the wine room has a cleverly re-purposed old freezer locker handle that completes the vintage feel. The entire room is lined with barn wood and is sure to delight wine or hobby enthusiasts as a space to enjoy their passion.
Backtracking towards the exercise room, there is another full bathroom with heated marble floors, a jetted tub and a delightfully placed dry sauna finished out with natural cedar offering a welcomed fresh aroma to the space. Finally, the lower level is the home to a wonderful storage room methodically organized to maximize extra storage. All the mechanicals are up to date and the well and septic equipment were updated in 2005 and passed compliance inspections as recently as 2011.
In summary, this transcendent home is not to be missed for it is unmatched in delivering personality and charm along with modern conveniences and functionality. From its far reaching artistic touches, to its European influences and faithfully integrated conveniences I truly hope you enjoy your tour of this remarkable home.
