BUILDING HISTORY
Listed as a National Historic Landmark in 1983, Washburn Lofts is part of the Washburn-Crosby Mill A Mill complex that includes the neighboring Mill City Museum. Washburn-Crosby was the forerunner of General Mills and, in its heyday, this complex was the largest flour mill in the world.
The Washburn Lofts building itself was the A Mill’s Utility Building & Sack House (packaging plant). It was home to the famous Betty Crocker Kitchen, and was the birthplace of WCCO (Washburn-Crosby Co.) Radio.
The three terra cotta figures on the building's south facade represent the history of milling technology and were designed by Minneapolis sculptor John Karl Daniels — best known for his sculpture of Leif Ericson at the Minnesota State Capitol.
